Angklung Community Class

  • Nusantara Arts 490 Lafayette Avenue Buffalo, NY, 14222 United States (map)

You are invited to join our Angklung Community Class! Join us for t

wice monthly angklung classes for all levels.

Angklung is a musical instrument from the Sundanese in Indonesia that is

made of a varying number of bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame.

The tubes are carved to produce a resonant pitch when struck and are

tuned to octaves, like Western handbells.

Angklung is best thought of as a set of several individual single-note instruments, each one comprised of a pair of bamboo tubes in a higher/lower octave pair sounded by a loose rattle. The result is a uniquely full, clear but short-sustaining, dry note.

Our group has performed at UB International Education Week, UB Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, OLV Human Services, Eastman School of Music, and more!

Teacher: Maria Murphy
Maria was born in Solo, Indonesia. She’s been living in Buffalo, NY since 1998. She earned a bachelor’s degree from UB and master’s degree in business administration from the University of People, a US accredited college based in Pasadena, CA. Maria currently works in finance at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Like most girls growing up in Indonesia, Maria learned Indonesian dance and Angklung in school. She inherited music talent from her parents. Both parents earned their music degree in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Her father became a popular singer and music composer. In 2021, the Indonesian Marching Band community named him as the father of Indonesian Marching Band. He led Indonesian Marching Band to perform in the US Rose Parade, Auckland (New Zealand), Oslo (Norway), Sydney (Australia). Her mother became a classical singer, taught singing class and traditional Javanese dance. It is always Maria’s passion to help create awareness of Indonesian culture through music in Buffalo.

In support of the Angklung Goes to School and Angklung Goes to America programs, Maria recruited several schools and organization in WNY area such as St. Benedict school in Amherst, OLV Human Services in Lackawanna, Eastman School of Music in Rochester, a public school in East Aurora, and Nusantara Arts in Buffalo. Maria also led the Buffalo group and performed Angklung in several events such as Elmwood Avenue Festival of the Art, Asian Food and Culture Festival, Lunar Year celebration, UB International Education Week and many more. Maria continues to introduce Angklung in local schools and to collaborate with local musicians. There will be more opportunities to perform at local events in Buffalo. We welcome everyone (all ages) and musicians to play together and keep the program going.
